Jamaica is blessed with pristine rivers brimming with life. The absence of extensive dam infrastructure has allowed these rivers to maintain robust and diverse ecosystems. In these watercourses, it is common to find an abundance of species such as crayfish, fish, and lush vegetation, all evidenced by the crystal-clear waters that flow freely. The attached image illustrates the vibrant biodiversity that characterizes these Jamaican rivers.
Comparison with the Dominican Republic
In contrast, many rivers in the Dominican Republic, especially in the municipality of San José de las Matas, have seen a significant decline in biodiversity. The dams at Sabana Iglesia and Bao de Janico have negatively impacted these ecosystems. The construction of dams interrupts the natural flow of water, fragments habitats, and reduces areas where species can thrive. These structures also affect water quality and the availability of essential nutrients for aquatic life.
The current administration, along with EGEHID, has proposed the construction of three additional dams. This plan could have disastrous consequences for the few Dominican rivers that still retain some biodiversity. The Jamaican experience shows that free-flowing rivers have a greater capacity to sustain diverse and healthy life.
The Importance of Preserving Our Rivers
It is crucial that we learn from positive examples like Jamaica and work to preserve and restore our own rivers. Implementing sustainable strategies and protecting our water resources not only benefits the environment but also ensures the long-term well-being of our communities.
Rivers are the arteries of our planet, and it is our responsibility to protect and maintain them for future generations.
